U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today congratulated Manvel Elementary School and Sweetwater Elementary School in Devils Lake for being selected as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The Manvel and Devils Lake communities should be proud of their hard work and dedication to provide top-notch learning opportunities to their students, said Heitkamp. Growing up the daughter of a school cook and a seasonal construction worker, I know that without the excellent public education I received, I would not be where I am today. Receiving this high honor is a testament to the commitment and motivation of not just the teachers, but also the parents and communities who each and every day invest their time, skills and compassion in our next generation of leaders. Founded in 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students academic achievement. A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag overhead has become a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities. Since the programs founding, the U.S. Department of Education has bestowed this coveted award on more than 7,000 of Americas schools. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
