U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, today announced that a Bismarck-based small business owner will join the National Womens Business Council. The Council is a federal group comprised of 15 women from around the country that advises the President, Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) on economic issues and concerns relevant to women business owners throughout the country. Heitkamp recommended Kari Warberg Block for a position on the National Womens Business Council based on her strong business leadership and innovative vision as Founder and CEO of Bismarck-based Earth-Kind Inc., a biobased manufacturing company that produces organic rodent repellent and air fresheners. In June 2014, Warberg Block participated in an event in Washington, at Heitkamps invitation, to provide a firsthand perspective on the economic and environmental opportunities that biobased manufacturing provides. Last year, Warberg Block was named North Dakota Small Business Person of the Year by SBA for her outstanding success in starting and growing a small business in the state. In North Dakota and throughout our country, small businesses employ folks from all walks of life, help families put food on their tables, and keep our economy moving forward. But success on Main Street wouldnt be possible without the hard work and tenacity of small business owners like Kari, said Heitkamp. She is such a passionate woman leader and it was a great honor to recommend Kari for a position on the National Womens Business Council, where she will bring a unique and important perspective to solving some of our nations biggest economic challenges for years to come. I feel so honored to have received a congressional nomination to serve in this capacity by Senator Heitkamp, said Warberg Block. Members of the National Womens Business Council are appointed by SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet to serve three-year terms. The Council conducts research, communicates its findings, and works to expand and improve opportunities for women business owners throughout the country. In North Dakota, more than 96 percent of employers are considered small businesses and they employ more than 60 percent of the states private-sector workforce.
