U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $3.6 million in emergency federal funding for the Fort Totten School District to build a new facility for its alternative high school program and Career and Technical Education programs. Students and faculty were forced to evacuate the old facility due to mold and dust levels that were three times higher than is considered healthy. Programs are temporarily located at Tate Topa Tribal School. These federal funds, awarded through the United States Department of Education Impact Aid Program, will restore the classrooms, labs, administrative areas, restrooms and counseling areas that were lost. The new facility will accommodate six teachers and 55-75 students in a total of 9,560 square feet of new space. Native American youth often have the cards stacked against them from a young age, and its our trust and treaty responsibility to make sure we provide the support and resources they need to succeed, said Heitkamp. These emergency federal funds through Impact Aid will play a critical role in not only making sure Native American students have a safe place to learn and grow, but to show them that they matter and that education is important. Since her time as North Dakotas Attorney General in the 1990s, Heitkamp has worked with tribes to stand up for Native families. Her bipartisan bill to create a Commission on Native Children unanimously passed in the U.S. Senate in June 2015, and just days later it was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Heitkamp also continues to push for legislation to improve the juvenile justice system for Native youth as well as addressing the suicide epidemic among Native youth. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
