U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today visited Ed Clapp Elementary School in Fargo to donate 10 U.S. Senate computers for use in classrooms. The U.S. Senate Computers for Schools Program helps public schools take advantage of the information age by channeling surplus Senate computers into classrooms countrywide. All registered public schools in the United States and territories are eligible. Heitkamp selected Ed Clapp Elementary School, which opened in fall 2015, to receive the gently used computers so the school can meet students technology needs without having to buy new equipment. Technology is revolutionizing how our kids learn, and these computers will help students at Ed Clapp get the best education they can, enabling them to connect to resources and find tools that can help them achieve, said Heitkamp. Our states public schools do a great job putting North Dakotas children on the path to success. These computers will help one of Fargos newest schools as it educates our next generation of leaders. The ten HP computers with 21-inch flat-screen monitors arrived at the school in November, and were re-imaged for student learning by Fargo Public Schools. Two computers were distributed to each of the schools four kindergarten classrooms, and two computers went to the schools special education classroom. The computers will be used to enhance individualized learning through online math and reading programs. On Wednesday, Heitkamp will visit Flasher Public School, which received 15 gently used computers through the program. Heitkamp has long fought to improve educational opportunities for all students whether by expanding access to technology, calling for increased funding resources, or by improving school breakfast and lunch. In January, Heitkamp held a roundtable discussion with North Dakota teachersto hear about the challenges schools in North Dakota face, and to assess how she can address their concerns in the Senate. During the discussion, educators laid out their priorities and spoke about solutions to better meet the needs of North Dakotas education system and students, including a plan to address Native American educational issues, expand early childhood education, and increase preparation for higher education. Earlier this year, Heitkampre-introduced her bipartisan bill with Republican Senator Susan Collins from Maine to give schools greater access to the tools and resources they need to offer healthy food options for students, reduce waste, and make resources stretch further. HerSchool Food ModernizationAct would authorize grants and loan assistance to help schools purchase and upgrade equipment, as well as strengthen training to help school food personnel meet updated nutrition standards all at no additional cost to taxpayers. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
