The federal funds announced today will strengthen North Dakota’s and the Spirit Lake Tribe’s ability to combat substance abuse and treat mental health so individuals and families can lead healthy and productive lives.” These federal funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Mental Health Services and are distributed as follows: Spirit Lake Tribe: $195,587 North Dakota Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health: $95,000 Heitkamp is a strong advocate for addressing mental health challenges and the potential substance abuse that they can lead to. This summer, Heitkamp worked to address the challenges children in Indian Country face by highlighting the impact that a traumatic experience can have on the mental wellbeing of individuals, particularly among children. Additionally, as part of her Strong and Safe Communities Report, Heitkamp emphasized the need to address mental health challenges that can potentially lead to problems in the future, such as crime and drug abuse. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
