U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today highlighted North Dakotas academic success and congratulated students and teachers at Manvel Elementary School, one of two schools in the state to be recently named a National Blue Ribbon School an honor given to schools based on academic excellence or significant improvements made in students academic achievement. Heitkamp read with students ranging from Kindergarten 4th grade, held a question-and-answer session with 5th 8th graders, and reinforced the importance of getting a good education starting at a young age and the opportunities it can provide for students and communities across North Dakota. Heitkamp also presented Manvel Elementary School with an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Making sure North Dakotas kids get a great education starting at a young age is one of the most important and worthwhile investments we can make, said Heitkamp. Many of us including me know that we would not be where we are today if it werent for an excellent education, an important foundation for future success. I again congratulate the ambitious students of Manvel Elementary School, its dedicated teachers and administrators, and the entire Manvel community for coming together and devoting so much time, energy, and compassion to earn this honor and make a positive impact in the lives of North Dakotas children. Heitkamp announced last month that Manvel Elementary School and Sweetwater Elementary School in Devils Lake were named 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Founded in 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students academic achievement. A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag overhead has become a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policymakers in thousands of communities.
