The federal funding announced today will help cover the cost of flood devastation that ravaged so many of North Dakotans in 2011.” This federal funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Heitkamp has been pushing to make sure the federal government lives up to its responsibilities to assist North Dakota in recovery from past flooding and helping protect communities from future potential flood damage. In May 2016, Heitkamp joined leaders and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials in signing a cost share agreement on the study of the Souris River basin flood protections. Last year, Heitkamp successfully pushed for the year-end spending bill Congress passed to include new Army Corps study and construction starts for flood projects. Once the spending bill made 10 new study starts available, Heitkamp ramped up pressure on the White House to make sure the Administration’s 2017 budget included $500,000 for Minot flood protections. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
