During the session veterans can learn about opportunities to access resources related to federal and state veterans’ benefits, military records, mental health, post-traumatic stress, retirement, financial issues, employment assistance, and housing assistance. The Towner County Veterans Service Officer will be there, as well as a counselor from the Grand Forks Vet Center to explain services and resources offered by the Vet Center.   “‘Heidi Helps’ sessions make sure that North Dakotans who don’t live near one of my five state offices still have easy access to my staff, and I encourage veterans in the Cando area to come out to get their questions answered and to get the help they deserve,” said Heitkamp. “Folks in our state serve in the military at a rate far higher than the national average, and we owe them such a debt of gratitude when they come home. So if you or a veteran you know could use assistance with services or benefits, join my staff in Cando later this month – no appointments necessary. The local Veterans Service Officer and Vet Center counselor will also be on hand to help.”   Earlier this month Heitkamp’s staff held a similar session for veterans in Fort Totten. Heitkamp’s staff holds “Heidi Helps” sessions to better serve North Dakotans who don’t live near her state offices in Bismarck, Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot. The sessions are held in temporary locations for a few hours to help Heitkamp and her staff guarantee they’re as accessible and helpful as possible to communities all across North Dakota. Past sessions have been held in Wahpeton, Bottineau, New Rockford, Lisbon, Jamestown, and Langdon. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
