U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced more than $22 million in federal assistance to help low-income North Dakota families, seniors, and Native American tribes heat their homes this winter season. North Dakotans know all too well the frigid temperatures our state will face this winter and we need to make sure our seniors, low-income families, and tribes have the resources they need to stay warm. No one should have to make the decision to either heat their homes or put food on the table. These federal funds will make sure those who are most in need do not have to make that decision, said Heitkamp. In North Dakota we know how to come together as a community to keep our friends and family strong and safe, whether its pitching in to help your neighbor shovel their driveway or plowing the streets to get our kids to school, we know how to make it through the harsh winters together. And we are counting on our federal partners to come through to keep our seniors, families, and tribes safe this winter. Specifically, North Dakota families and seniors living in low-income households will receive more than $17 million in federal assistance to help offset heat and energy costs during the states coldest months. Additionally, more than $5 million in federal funds is available for North Dakotas Native American tribes. Funding for our tribal nations is distributed as follows: Spirit Lake Tribe: $1,144,373 Standing Rock Sioux Tribe: $1,588,876 Three Affiliated Tribes: $915,498 Turtle Mountain Chippewa Band: $2,059,871 This federal support follows Heitkamps request she made earlier this month to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services pressing it to release these critical funds North Dakotans will need. The funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Eligible families outside Indian reservations must apply directly to the State of North Dakota to receive LIHEAP funding. For eligible families living on Indian reservations, their tribes need to directly apply to the State of North Dakota to receive LIHEAP funding, which is then distributed to those on the reservation who qualify. North Dakotans can learn more about home heating assistance eligibility and apply for assistance byclicking here.To ask questions or to receive help filling out an application, individuals not living on Indian reservations can contact theirlocal County Social Service Office. Individuals living on Indian reservations can contact their local tribal offices. LIHEAP is a block grant program under which the federal government gives annual grants to states, territories, and Indian tribal organizations to operate home energy assistance programs for needy households. The program receives funding from two sources: contingency funds and regular funds. Contingency funds are allocated to states at the discretion of the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services. These funds may be released at any point in the fiscal year to provide additional home energy assistance. Regular funds are allocated in the annual appropriations bill. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
