U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $344,000 in federal funding to improve and encourage highway safety measures. Specifically, the funding promotes programs that are designed to reduce crashes as a result of driving under the influence, as well as injuries and deaths resulting from individuals that are riding improperly restrained in motor vehicles. Additional funding will boost programs that improve timeliness, accuracy and uniformity across data systems statewide. Having more folks on the road is an indication of our energy and jobs boom, but it also means that our growing communities face more transportation challenges and risks, said Heitkamp. These federal funds wont just work to protect folks from improperly restrained vehicles or drivers under the influence of alcohol, but will also help make sure our statewide data systems are united and streamlined so that less crashes occur going forward. Its our job as legislators to make sure communities have the roads and the infrastructure to continue to thrive thats why Ive been pushing for a greater focus on transportation services and its why Ill keep working on measures to keep our state moving safely and efficiently. This funding is made possible through the Department of Transportations (DOT) Occupation Protection Incentive Grants, the State Traffic Safety Information System Improvement Grants, and the Alcohol Impaired Driving Countermeasures Incentive Grants. The grants are distributed as follows: North Dakota Department of Transportation $215,208.94. These funds, distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will be awarded through the Impaired Driving Countermeasures Grants for 2015. These funds are intended to encourage states to adopt effective programs to reduce crashes resulting from drivers operating motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. North Dakota Department of Transportation $68,905.01. These funds, distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will be awarded through the Occupant Protection Grants for 2015. These funds are intended to reduce highway deaths and injuries resulting from individuals riding unrestrained or improperly restrained in motor vehicles. North Dakota Department of Transportation $59,978.41. These funds, distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will be awarded through the State Traffic Safety Information System Improvement Grants for 2015. These funds are intended to encourage states to adopt and implement effective programs to improve the timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity, integration and accessibility of state data to improve the states ability to observe and analyze trends in crash occurrences, rates, outcomes, and circumstances. This fall, Heitkamp launched her Strong & Safe Communities Initiative to address emerging challenges throughout North Dakota in the wake of the states energy boom. Specifically, Heitkamp is leading a Strong & Safe Communities Task Force comprised of experts, advocates, and officials throughout the state who have a strong understanding of some of these new challenges in the state, including the rise of crimes related to human trafficking. The Task Force will also look into increases in drug-related crime, challenges to Indian Country, domestic violence, infrastructure stress, the increased transportation of crude oil by rail, as well as other issues. This group, led by Heitkamp, will provide recommendations on the best ways to address these safety issues over the next five years so that Heitkamp can work toward policies that keep our communities strong and families safe in their homes. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
