U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $30,000 in federal funding to help protect North Dakotans from sex offenders and reduce sex exploitation in our neighborhoods. Specifically, these funds will help the North Dakota Office of the Attorney General implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, which includes programs to protect children and adults from sexual exploitation and violent crime, prevent child abuse and child pornography, and promote internet safety. In 1991, while Heitkamp served as North Dakotas Attorney General, the first sex offender registration statute passed in North Dakota which she then implemented. Since my days as Attorney General, and now as a Senator, I have gone after those who prey on our vulnerable populations and have worked to bring additional services and treatment to victims of abuse and sexual violence, said Heitkamp. These funds will help enable those efforts to continue by making sure North Dakotans are aware if sexual predators live in their communities. This registry combined with programs authorized through the Violence Against Women Act have made a difference in reducing sexual violence in North Dakota and across the country, and Ill keep fighting to support efforts that make sure our families and communities are safe. In the Senate, Heitkamp has built on her work to combat domestic violence and stop those who seek to harm adults and children by helping push the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through Congress. It was one of the first bills the Senate passed after Heitkamp joined the chamber. As North Dakotas Attorney General, Heitkamp helped implement the initial VAWA after the bill became law in 1994. Since then, programs supported by VAWA have made drastic changes. According to the Justice Department, the annual incidences of domestic violence have fallen more than 60 percent since 1993. Additionally, Heitkamp has expanded her efforts and has become a leader in Congress in working to combat human trafficking in North Dakota, across the country, and around the world. She helped introduce a bill to encourage victims of human trafficking come forward and provide services for the victims. In September 2013, she held a Senate hearing where she heard firsthand what the federal, state, and local levels of government were doing to combat human trafficking and how to begin to address it as a law enforcement issue. And Heitkamp has worked closely with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Cindy McCain a global leader in the fight against human trafficking to bring light to the issue. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
