U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today issued the following statement on the commissioning of the USS North Dakota, a nuclear submarine that is the second Navy vessel to be named for the state. North Dakota has a strong tradition of military service and the commissioning of the USS North Dakota is a proud day for our state, said Heitkamp. This is a culmination of a lot of hard work, and this boat will be an integral part of our national defense, helping keep Americans safe. Today, we honor the people who built the USS North Dakota, the sailors who will sail her, and all the North Dakotans who have bravely served our nation throughout the years." In November 2013, Heitkamp attended and spoke at the christening of the USS North Dakota in Groton, CT. The USS North Dakota is a Virginia-class submarine. The submarine will play a critical role in maintaining U.S. naval dominance around the globe, providing the Navy with a variety of capabilities, including anti-ship warfare, long-term surveillance, and special forces operations. Today's ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CT and a live stream of the ceremony will be available at www.navy.mil. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
