U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced that the University of North Dakotas (UND) College of Engineering-Institute for Energy Studies has been selected as one of 10 nationwide projects to receive federal support to bolster the universitys cutting edge coal energy development research. Working in tandem with UNDs Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) and with the Barr Engineering and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the universitys College of Engineering-Institute for Energy Studies will receive nearly $750,000 in federal funding to boost the schools efforts to recover rare earth elements from coal that are essential and in high demand across electronic, computer, transportation, health care, and national defense industries nationwide. For years, the University of North Dakota has been leading the nation in innovative research and development of clean coal technologies, said Heitkamp. Today UND was selected by the Department of Energy to join a small group of elite research institutions that will receive funding from the agency to support the universitys expanded efforts on recovering of rare earth elements from coal which have become high-demand commodities for a broad span of industries from computers and electronics to health care and national defense. Such investments will help boost UNDs proven track record of stellar clean coal development and research. Heitkamp has consistently worked with UNDs EERC which endorsed Heitkamps legislation to provide a viable path forward for coal as an energy source on ways to promote clean coal technologies. Todays selection of UND by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will provide critical support for the universitys efforts to innovate and develop coal technologies. In addition to UND, the DOE also selected the University of Wyoming, Drake University, the West Virginia University Research Center, Neumann Systems Group, Inc., Battelle Memorial Institute, the University of Kentucky Research Foundation, Physical Sciences, Inc., Southern Research Institute, and Tusaar, Inc. These federal funds are authorized by the DOEs National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
