U.S. Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) today pressed U.S. negotiators to include carbon capture and utilization in any final agreement reached at the United Nations climate talks in Paris, which will conclude this week. The Senators called on Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, American negotiators at the conference, to work with global partners and commit to proving out carbon capture utilization and storage technology. The technology could help the U.S. and world maintain a diverse energy mix that includes traditional energy sources, while still reducing national and global carbon emissions. We absolutely need coal a reliable and redundant fuel in our energy mix. But without research and development, its less likely that clean coal technology will take off. This technology promises to reduce carbon emissions without leaving behind reliable, affordable fuels like coal and natural gas, said Heitkamp. Coal and natural gas are reliable and redundant sources of baseload power. Carbon capture utilization and storage has the potential to make those traditional fuels cleaner sources of power, by keeping their carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. However, the technology will not become viable without a commitment to the concept and technology, as well as robust funding in research and development in the U.S. and around the world.Prominent energy experts have identified the importance of carbon capture utilization and storage. Heitkamp has led efforts in the U.S. Senate to maintain a diverse energy mix in the U.S. and to make sure North Dakota can continue providing families and businesses with affordable, reliable electricity using coal, which provides about 80 percent of North Dakotas electricity. Her efforts include pushing back against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules impacting coal-fired power plants. A steadfast proponent of a national all-of-the-above energy strategy for North Dakota and the U.S., Heitkamp has long been a champion of North Dakotas diverse energy sector. Her work to find a realistic path forward for coal builds on her more than a decade of experience on the board of directors of Dakota Gasification, the one-of-a-kind synfuels plant in Beulah, N.D. During her service on North Dakotas Tax Commissioner, on the North Dakota Industrial Commission, and as the states Attorney General, Heitkamp was able to work on viable solutions to make sure coal remains a strong part of the North Dakotas energy mix. After pressing EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, Heitkampbrought McCarthyto North Dakota in February of 2014 so she could hear about the impacts of EPA regulations directly from North Dakotans.Heitkamp has alsobrought U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Monizto North Dakota in March 2014 to push the U.S. Department of Energy for more investment in clean coal technology.
