U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced nearly $400,000 in federal funding to the North Dakota Department of Corrections Division of Juvenile Services to help support alternative methods of supervision of youth in the juvenile justice system. Specifically, the funds will be used to support the Attendant Care program, which provides supervision for nearly 700 youth throughout the state as an alternative to detention or jail. Additionally, the funds will be used to help address a range of juvenile justice issues for Native American youth in North Dakota. North Dakotas juvenile justice system helps keep our communities safe and rehabilitate our states youth when they have fallen on the wrong side of the law. But the system needs the necessary resources to change outcomes for juvenile offenders not keep them in a destructive cycle, said Heitkamp. As a former North Dakota Attorney General, I know firsthand that education, treatment, counseling, and early intervention efforts can make a difference in getting youth back on the right track, especially those with substance abuse issues or who have suffered some form of domestic or sexual abuse. These funds will help support these kinds of efforts, and I will continue to push for smart investments in programs that improve the strength and safety of communities for North Dakotas youth and their families. The funds are authorized through the U.S. Department of Justice, awarded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Earlier this month, Heitkamp launched her newStrong and Safe Communities Initiativeto help address some of the emerging challenges facing the state by bringing a greater focus to keeping North Dakotas communities strong and families safe in their homes. Heitkamps Strong and Safe Communities Task Force will include communities leaders from across the state who will help focus on addressing the new safety challenges the state faces such as increases in drug-related crimes, human trafficking, infrastructure stress, and the movement of crude by rail through North Dakota towns, as well as other issues. It will then offer recommendations to help make sure North Dakotas communities remain strong and safe well into the future. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
