U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today issued the following statement after the President denied the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline essentially blocking the project. After about seven years of exhaustive studies and delays, the Administration finally made a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline unfortunately, it made a decision purely driven by politics that ignored the facts, said Heitkamp. This commonsense project is just one small piece of a much larger energy strategy, but it has grown into a symbol for whether our country will support needed energy infrastructure. If we truly believe that realizing North American energy security and independence is a worthy objective for our nation, implementing a diverse energy strategy with our North American neighbors is necessary, and Ill continue to work with our Canadian partners as Ive done in the past. Yet, political ideologies on both sides of the aisle amplified the Keystone XL pipeline into something well beyond its actual reality. As I have said time and time again its a pipeline. For years, Ive been calling on the President to support this energy infrastructure project or at least just finally make a decision and building support among Senate Democrats for the project. Now Congress needs to find a path forward to reverse todays decision. We need to work together to rise above partisan rhetoric, deal in real facts, achieve the all-of-the-above energy strategy this county needs, and see the Keystone pipeline for what it really is just one more building block in making our nation more energy secure. Long before her time in the Senate, Heitkamp has strongly supported projects to diversify North Americas energy infrastructure, including through the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Over the past two and a half years, Heitkamp has provided critical leverage to move the project forward in the Senate building essential Democratic support for a bipartisan bill to approve the Keystone pipeline. In addition to calling for bipartisan support for the bill last November, Heitkamp recruited 10 other Democratic Senators in April 2014 key support that was vital for the bills passage in the Senate to join her efforts to put pressure on the President to make a decision on the pipeline. Heitkamp has repeatedly taken action to move the Keystone XL pipeline forward, including: January 22, 2015 Introduced five common-sense, workable energy solutions as amendments to the bill to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline that would have strengthened the nations commitment to a path forward for coal energy, increased certainty for wind energy workers, cut bureaucratic red-tape for Native tribes seeking to drill oil on their reservations, and improved rail and pipeline oil transportation safety as well as resources and tools for first responders. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
