U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced nearly $620,000 in federal funding to provide support to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in rural North Dakota communities. The funds will help Bismarcks Abused Adult Resource Center (AARC) enhance the safety of rural victims of sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, and stalking in rural service areas including the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The funds will enable AARC to improve current rural Sexual Assault Response Teams protocols and services to sexual assault victims and maintain a teen dating violence program. The funds are specifically to help meet the unique needs of Native American victims and create responses for LGBTQ individuals, those with disabilities, those experiencing abuse later in life, and immigrants and migrants. With the many rural communities throughout North Dakota, we have to not only work together to fight crime in these areas but also provide support and services to victims of abuse and sexual violence, said Heitkamp. As a former North Dakota Attorney General, I know how critical it is to make sure were vigilant in improving the safety of everyone in our state and this program tackles that issue head-on. By staying persistent and working together, we can continue to provide the support victims need and combat sexual and domestic violence in North Dakota and across the country. The funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women, as part of the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program. In the Senate, Heitkamp has built on her work to combat domestic violence and stop those who seek to harm adults and children by helping push the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through Congress. It was one of the first bills the Senate passed after Heitkamp joined the chamber. As North Dakotas Attorney General, Heitkamp helped implement the initial VAWA after the bill became law in 1994. Since then, programs supported by VAWA have made drastic changes. According to the Justice Department, the annual incidences of domestic violence have fallen more than 60 percent since 1993. In the Senate, Heitkamp has expanded her efforts and has become a leader in Congress in working to combat human trafficking in North Dakota, across the country, and around the world. Shehelped introduce a billto encourage victims of human trafficking come forward and provide services for the victims. In September 2013, sheheld a Senate hearingwhere she heard firsthand what the federal, state, and local levels of government were doing to combat human trafficking and how to begin to address it as a law enforcement issue. And Heitkamp has worked closely with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Cindy McCain a global leader in the fight against human trafficking to bring light to the issue. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
