In anticipation of Veterans Day, Hoeven issued the following statement to honor veterans throughout North Dakota and the nation. Today and every day, we honor the brave men and women who have courageously risked their lives to protect our freedoms. There is no greater risk than what our veterans have made, nor no greater honor than what they deserve. Many times, our way of life has been assaulted, and in every instance, our veterans have answered the call to protect our nation. The United States is today the freest and most successful nation the world has ever known because of their selfless service ad sacrifice. Hoeven continues to work to help veterans access health care in a timely manner and closer to home. Last month, Hoeven announced the Veterans Care Coordination initiative, a new pilot program to help veterans seeking care through the Veterans Choice Program in North Dakota and western Minnesota coordinate their health care needs directly with the Fargo Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, rather than Health Net, a third party contractor headquartered in California. The initiative, which resulted from veterans listening sessions and roundtables Hoeven held around the state, will allow veterans to access health care in their local communities when VA facilities are not available or timely. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, Hoeven works to secure strong funding to provide the nation's veterans with the care they have earned. In September, he helped pass the Fiscal Year 2017 Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill, which included record funding for veterans. Further, the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee passed legislation which included provisions from two Hoeven bills to allow veterans greater access to long-term care facilities (LTC) in their home communities.
