Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), today voted for H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $4.8 billion in new funding to the National Institute of Health (NIH),  increased funding for Alzheimer’s and cancer research and provides $1 billion in grants to states to fight the opioid abuse epidemic. The funding is fully offset. This bill passed the Senate by a vote of 94-5. “The 21st Century Cures Act is an important piece of legislation that addresses the opioid epidemic devastating Oklahoma and the country as a whole, as well as advancing medical research for illnesses like Alzheimer’s, cancer and rare pediatric diseases ” Inhofe said. “This bipartisan bill will lead to lifesaving medical breakthroughs that will benefit all Oklahomans. The passage of this legislation creates new hope among doctors, researchers, and patients alike in its effort to spur advancements in biomedical research.”  “This increase in funding to the NIH will provide a major shot in the arm for medical research across the United States. By bolstering support for initiatives ranging from Alzheimer’s to cancer, promising projects that otherwise might have gone unexplored will now be undertaken. The payoffs will come in the form of heightened activity in this key sector of our nation’s economy and, ultimately, in new treatments and better outcomes for patients suffering from devastating diseases.” – Stephen Prescott, M.D. President, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation 21st Century Cures Act passed the House last week by a vote of 392–26. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
