Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) praised the President's executive order today that would require individuals to declare asylum only at ports of entry. Currently, unauthorized immigrants are able to declare asylum when apprehended by Border Patrol after crossing the border unlawfully. The asylum process should be for those who truly need itnot individuals using it after they are caught illegally crossing the border in an attempt to avoid deportation. Smugglers and illegal aliens have attempted to use false claims of asylum to gain entry into the United States, are released pending a court date, then never show up for their court dateremaining illegally in the country. I'm pleased President Trump is taking this step to end the abuse of the asylum process. I look forward to working with him on other components of immigration reform, like my Asylum Abuse Reduction Act and building the wall. Last week, Sen. Inhofe announced the WALL Act, legislation that would fully fund the border wall by closing loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to receive federal benefits. In August, Sen. Inhofe also unveiled the Asylum Abuse Reduction Act that would strengthen the integrity of the immigration process by requiring migrants to declare asylum at embassies or consulates in Mexico or Canada before entering the United States. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
