Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), today released the following statement regarding President Obama's meeting at the White House with Senate leadership to discuss ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear enrichment program: "The President's goal in holding today's meeting is to convince me and my colleagues to trust him and the Iranians to negotiate a deal on Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The President is asking us to trust a country that has deceived us and concealed their nuclear program for over 20 years. He is asking us to trust a country that continues to support terrorism around the globe, continues to repress the Iranian people, and under President Rouhani's leadership has increased its support for the mass slaughter of Syrians. Furthermore, a November report from the IAEA says that Iran has continued nuclear enrichment -- moving closer to a nuclear weapon -- despite being required under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and five UN Security Council Resolutions to suspend enrichment. Until Iran takes clear and demonstrable steps to fulfill its obligations and shut down its illicit nuclear program, I cannot seriously consider easing sanctions on Iran and thereby putting our national security a risk." During the meeting, Inhofe was managing the National Defense Authorization Act on the Senate floor. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
