France is our oldest ally, and we stand with the French people. Since September 2014, I have been speaking out that the United States has not been strong enough or clear enough in our strategy to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL. This week, I called on the president to exercise Article 5 of the NATO accord to engage the entire free world against terror. What happened in Paris could happen anywhere and we must stop it now. You cant negotiate with somebody who will cut your head off or burn someone in the town square. Youve got to eliminate them. Until we begin to make ISIL pay the price for what theyve done, they will run rampant. President Obama and his administration continue to cling to a strategy that is viewed as weak and unclear by both our enemies and our allies. It is a strategy of containment and complacency toward the threats and horrific actions of terrorist groups. The president should change our militarys mission so that we can finally eliminate and destroy ISIL. On Monday night, I held a telephone town hall meeting where I heard directly from Georgians on this and many other issues facing our nation. If you missed it, you can listen here. Syrian Refugees This week, I sent a letter to President Obama urging the administration to ensure that no members, supporters or sympathizers of ISIL are infiltrating Syrian refugee movements to enter the United States. We must not allow for an increase to the number of refugees coming to our country until this administration puts forth a strong strategy for ensuring that radical jihadists are kept out of the United States. The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to strengthen screening of refugees on Thursday by a veto-proof margin. I am hopeful the Senate will take up legislation soon. Stopping Government Overreach I am thankful that on Tuesday the Senate passed two resolutions preventing the Environmental Protection Agency from implementing new energy regulations that would raise the cost of living for hardworking taxpayers and turn back the clock on Americas energy independence. Here are the details on both resolutions of disapproval: S.J.Res.24 Passed 52-46 Stops the EPAs newest requirement that existing coal-fired power plants must reduce their emissions by 32 percent by the year 2030. S.J.Res.23 Passed 52-46 Prevents the EPAs plan from being imposed on new power sources in the future. To read more about why I co-sponsored these resolutions, click here. Next week, the Senate is adjourned for the Thanksgiving holiday and I am looking forward to spending the week in Georgia meeting with many of you during the state work period. As we take time to celebrate, let us remember to be thankful for all of the men and women serving our nation both at home and abroad.
