I was proud to support this important legislation. Maintaining Key Sanctions on Iran I am pleased that yesterday the Senate unanimously passed the Iran Sanctions Extension Act to hold Iran accountable for its attempts to threaten the United States and destabilize the Middle East. The bill extends sanctions on Tehran that would otherwise expire on Dec. 31, 2016. Maintaining sanctions against Iran is just one step to make certain the U.S. keeps any worthwhile leverage against this anti-American regime. I look forward to working with the new administration and the 115th Congress to review our comprehensive policy on Iran. This Week in the Senate We also spent part of the week working on legislation that will help find cures for diseases to help drastically improve lives in the 21st century. On Wednesday, I spoke on the Senate floor about the importance of the 21st Century Cures Act. This legislation contains multiple provisions that I have fought for that will benefit Georgians and all American families. A few highlights include: An extension of a program to continue to spur investment in the development of therapies for rare pediatric diseases, The creation of a registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help advance research on neurological diseases, Medicare coverage for home infusion therapy services, and An exemption that will allow the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to continue to provide world class care for patients suffering from spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. Georgia Defense News It was announced this week that the U.S. Army will create a new Armor Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart. This addition will be the second Armor Brigade Combat team located at Fort Stewart and will highlight Georgia’s role in our nation's ability to project power and provide security assurance to our allies. The conversion is set to begin in summer 2017. Georgia's Dr. Tom Price Nominated to Lead U.S. HHS It was announced this week that President-elect Trump will nominate U.S. Representative Tom Price, M.D., R-Ga.-06, as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Tom Price is a true leader in Congress and an exceptional choice for this role. With his background as a practicing physician, Tom will bring real world experience and a single-minded focus on the needs of patients as we begin to replace Obamacare and implement free-market principles that will increase choice and lower the cost of health care for families and businesses. What's On Tap? Next week, the Senate will vote on the 21st Century Cures Act. The Senate will also take up the National Defense Authorization Act, the annual defense bill that paves the way for funding for many of Georgia's defense priorities. Additionally, I am keeping a close eye on Georgia interests as final negotiations on the conference report to work out differences between the U.S. House- and U.S. Senate passed versions of the Water Resources Development Act advance toward a final vote, as well as on legislation to fund the federal government into next year.
