By taking these long-awaited and important steps to update our tax code, we are helping grow the economy and create jobs while putting money back into the pockets of Americans. This pro-growth, pro-jobs tax overhaul will restore the American promise and show the world that the United States will again be a world-class nation, a competitor to fear, and a land of great opportunity for every American. On Tuesday, I gave Senate floor remarks highlighting some of the provisions that will benefit Georgia families and individuals including cutting individual income tax rates across the board, doubling the standard deduction, and doubling the child tax credit. Senate Working Hard For Veterans As chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, I take very seriously our responsibility to serve those who have served us. The Senate has accomplished significant bipartisan victories this year on behalf of our nations veterans. These efforts include the passage of 10 major pieces of veterans legislation--all of which have been signed into law-- that aim to strengthen veterans health care, benefits and support. The Senate has unanimously confirmed 10 of President Trumps nominees to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the U.S. Court of Veterans Appeals, including the number one and number two spots at the department. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the teamwork, leadership and commitment of all members of Congress, regardless of political party. The veterans of the United States have better health care, better benefits and a more modern and responsive VA in the years ahead as a result of our work this year, and Im proud to have been a part of it. On Thursday, I gave remarks on the Senate floor urging my colleagues to support the Caring for Our Veterans Act, which is currently awaiting a full Senate vote and would make the eleventh bill signed into law if passed before the end of the year. In Other Senate News: In 2017, the Republican-led Senate has been hard at work. In addition to the major tax reform overhaul and veterans' legislation, the Senate: Confirmed Justice Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court. Confirmed three U.S. attorneys for Georgias Northern, Middle and Southern Districts. Confirmed a record-breaking 12 U.S. circuit court judges across the country. Repealed a major component of Obamacare. Rolled back 15 Obama-era regulations, along with the U.S. House, to help the economy that has been burdened by these stifling, unnecessary government regulations. Imposed tough sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea. Strengthened our national defense. On Monday, the Senate voted to confirm Paul Compton, Jr., of Ala., to be general counsel of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, andto confirmOwen West, of Conn., to be an assistant secretary of defense. On Wednesday, I joined my colleagues on the Senate Finance Committee in introducing a bill to extend a number of tax provisions that expired at the beginning of this year, many of which provide incentives for American energy production. Among the tax provisions is a nuclear tax credit extension that I have championed that would aid nuclear reactors under construction at Plant Vogtle in Georgia. In Georgia, keeping the Plant Vogtle nuclear energy project on track will not only strengthen Americas energy security and national security, but it will preserve the more than 6,000 Georgia jobs created by this project, and I am committed to making sure this project stays on track for completion.
