I am pleased that my Senate colleagues passed the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriation Act. This legislation will ensure that our veterans, troops and critical military needs are funded in the coming fiscal year. America is the greatest nation in the world because of those who sacrificed and risked their lives for our freedoms while serving in the military. We must see to it that those who fought for this nation receive the support, care and benefits that they, along with their loved ones, deserve. I also encourage you to read my op-ed, Serving Those Who Served Us, that was published this week and details the work that we are doing as members of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs to make serving our veterans a priority. On Behalf of Veterans I have the honor and the privilege of working every day to support our veterans in Georgia and across the nation. I am proud of the work that we have done since I took over as chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs in January, but it should be viewed as a mere down-payment on what we owe the men and women who have bravely and selflessly served in the military. Some highlights of the progress we have made in the committee: Enactment of numerous laws to improve, reform, and reauthorize programs at VA, including the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act to help address the serious problem of veteran suicide, and the Veterans Identification Card Act of 2015 to allow all veterans to more easily provide documentation of their military service; Filling vacant leadership positions at VA with permanent leaders; Increased accountability of VA employees at all levels; and Closer and increased oversight of VAs activities.
