TransCanada first applied for a Presidential Permit on September 19, 2008. Isakson joined his Senate colleagues on the floor of the Senate in a colloquy led by Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., to highlight the importance of the project to secure America's energy future and create tens of thousands of badly needed jobs for Americans. View video here. “I'm here because I have a lot of experience in my lifetime dealing with national security issues and economic issues, and our failure to approve the Keystone Pipeline very simply is professional malpractice,” said Isakson in his floor remarks. “We sit here today on the cusp of being a net producer of energy,” Isakson continued. “We can use it in our national defense. We can use it in our national security. We can use it in our economy. If we produce the energy that we know we have available to us and if we bring in the energy safely and environmentally sound that we now have available to us, we can rule our foreign policy and our economy based on our own strength and not a dependence on anybody else.” “I want to be a part of seeking the best for our American people by bringing the energy to our country and being the most competitive economy in the world.” Isakson has been a strong proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline and co-sponsored legislation to force the Obama administration to issue a construction permit for the Keystone XL pipeline within 60 days.
