The legislation, introduced by Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), recognizes that recreational anglers should not be subjected to the same regulations that commercial anglers must follow. Early on this year, I heard from hundreds of Alabamians who wrote to me in support of the Modern Fish Act legislation. As a recreational fisherman myself, I knew I wanted to be a part of this effort to bring our fisheries management practices into the 21st century and protect one of our most beloved pastimes for future generations. This is a smart policy change that will protect our fish stocks and support a vital part of our state's economy. I urge my colleagues in the House to take the next step by passing the legislation and sending it to the President, said Senator Jones. From the moment he stepped into office, Senator Jones has made it clear that he understands and appreciates the importance of recreational fishing to Alabama and the entire nation, said Mike Leonard, the American Sportfishing Association's Vice President of Government Affairs. The Modern Fish Act, which Senator Jones was instrumental in helping to pass out of the Senate, will bring much needed improvements to how federal marine fisheries are managed to the benefit of anglers, recreational fishing-dependent businesses and our precious marine resources. In Alabama, the boating and fishing industry supports more than 14,000 jobs and nearly 500 local businesses. Nationally, boaters and anglers fund the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund through boat and fishing item taxes and license fees. In 2017, the fund collected more than $600 million, more than half of which went to fund sportfish restoration across the country.
