This visit comes after Senator Kim released a statement last week calling for increased transparency and accountability, and continued his call to shut down the facility. “Every detainee deserves to be treated humanely; there is nothing humane about having one medical doctor for over 800 detainees…it is simply disgraceful,” said Senator Kim. “The excuses and secrecy from ICE about the alarming number of medical emergencies must end and Delaney Hall must be shut down immediately.” Throughout the visit, he spoke directly with multiple detainees and medical staff at Delaney and demanded answers as to why there has been an uptick of emergencies in such short time. Speaking to advocates and detainee family members after the visit, Senator Kim called out the lack of appropriate medical staff needed to adequately care for the over 800 detainees inside and confirmed what he is hearing first-hand from detainees does not align with responses he has been receiving from ICE and GEO Group, highlighting the continued lack of transparency from ICE as these emergencies continue to occur. Senator Kim has visited Delaney Hall frequently over the last year and is leading the charge to hold GEO Group and those running Delaney Hall accountable. Along with conducting multiple prior oversight visits, Senator Kim also led members of the New Jersey congressional delegation in sending a letter to the Department of Homeland Security condemning the violence conducted by ICE Agents and calling for immediate action to stop it. Senator Kim also filed the Kim Amendments to end inhumane treatment in the facility, improve medical care at all ICE detention centers, and require de-escalation training for ICE officials.
