MINNESOTA – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, released the following statement on the Administration’s new tariffs on Canadian goods and Canada’s retaliatory tariffs. “Once again, the President’s tariffs are raising costs and increasing uncertainty for families, farmers, workers, and small businesses. I was one of the lead sponsors of the bill to overturn the tariffs on Canada that successfully passed the U.S. Senate. Canada is Minnesota’s top trading partner and our economies and communities are deeply connected. We have always been able to work through our differences and find solutions that benefit both countries. But instead this Administration has chosen to escalate a trade war with one of our closest allies. The new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, followed by Canada’s decision to retaliate, will only make it harder for Minnesota businesses and farmers to compete and will further drive up prices. I have opposed these tariffs from the beginning, and I will continue to stand up for the U.S.-Canada relationship to protect Minnesota’s economy and the strong trade ties that benefit both sides of the border.” Klobuchar, along with Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), introduced the Trade Review Act, legislation to require that any new tariffs receive congressional review and approval within 60 days. Earlier this year, legislation to repeal President Trump’s International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs on Canada was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. In October 2025, similar bipartisan legislation led by Senators Klobuchar, Kaine, Paul, and Warner passed the Senate 50-46. Klobuchar serves as co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group together with Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND).
