This legislation now goes to the House of Representatives for a vote. “When we invest in childcare, we invest in the future of our state. That is why I fought for this funding to provide more childcare options for families in and around Virginia,” said Klobuchar. “Access to childcare is essential, because it gives parents the freedom to pursue their careers and contribute to the economy, and it supports the safe and healthy development of our kids,” said Smith. “This investment in Virginia would make much needed improvements to Apple Tree Learning Center that will help hundreds of families get much needed childcare services.” The funding would bring a currently closed childcare center up to safety standards and address the childcare shortage on the Iron Range, restoring 127 childcare slots and supporting families and jobs. This funding was included in the appropriations bill for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and related agencies. For these funds to be delivered, the project will still need to be included in the final appropriations bill passed by the House as well and signed into law. Senators Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called “Congressionally Directed Spending” (CDS).
