We remember all the lives taken and we grieve with the families and friends who lost loved ones in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We also honor the courage of the first responders who risked their lives to save others, as well as the countless other acts of heroism and sacrifice we witnessed that day. We remember the Minnesotans we lost that day: Tom Burnett Jr. from Bloomington, Gordon Aamoth Jr. from Wayzata, Gary Koecheler from St. Paul, and Max Beilke from Alexandria. Tom, along with his fellow passengers on Flight 93, bravely gave his life to save others. Gordon was a 32-year-old former captain of his high school football team who had a bright future ahead of him, and Gary was a Vietnam War veteran who had been awarded the Bronze Star. They both worked in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Max died in the Pentagon after dedicating his entire life to our country, serving in Korea and Vietnam, and advocating on behalf of veterans and their families at the Pentagon. Let us always remember all whose lives were taken on that September day 25 years ago and those whose lives were cut short in the years that followed. We honor their memories by cherishing the values we share as Americans. Let us carry forward the spirit of courage, generosity, and shared purpose that our country showed in the days that followed.
