Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and others that will ensure that 1.5 million satellite TV subscribers in Vermont and across the country will continue to receive access to their current television content for the next five years. The legislation reauthorizes the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act, a law known as STELA, that provides consumers access to distant broadcast television content by satellite. The legislation has also been approved in the House, and it now goes to the White House for signature. The current copyright authorization for STELA expires on December 31. The legislation approved today extends that authorization another five years and ensures that consumers in Vermont and across the country who cannot otherwise receive broadcast signals over-the-air will not lose access to their current television content. Today the Senate has acted to ensure that 1.5 million Vermonters and Americans across the country will continue to receive satellite television programming at the end of the year, Leahy said. Sending this bill to the President shows the American people that Congress can come together in a bipartisan and bicameral fashion to pass legislation. The bill was the product of four committees in the House and Senate, and includes key copyright provisions from the bill Leahy authored with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that was unanimously approved by the Judiciary Committee in June.
