U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) today announced that West Virginia will receive $20 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant program for the I-64 widening project from St. Albans to Nitro. This project will increase system capacity on I-64, improve interchange traffic operations, enhance safety and facilitate economic growth in accordance with regional and local land use planning. As a member of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, I've made it my priority to ensure that rural areas like West Virginia are eligible for BUILD Grant funding so we can make necessary investments in infrastructure to spur economic development.I have worked with the DOT for years and spoke to Secretary Chao last week to advocate for more equal funding between rural and urban areas.I also sent a letter to DOT in July of this year advocating for this BUILD Grant. Last year was the first time since 2014 that we received a BUILD Grant, and today I am proud to announce another $20 million from DOT to widen I-64 to address the rural transportation challenges we face in West Virginia. This project will also expand tourism and create more economic development for our state by connecting our two most populous cities, creating a corridor of growth along I-64. I look forward to continuing to work with DOT Secretary Chao in the future for programs that benefit West Virginia, said Senator Manchin.
