The right to religious freedom is a key principle of our nation's founding for which generations of servicemen and servicewomen have sacrificed their lives, Senator Manchin said. It would disgrace their memory to strip this right away from them in death. This issue not only impacts the memorial in Bladensburg, Maryland but the ruling could affect every memorial with religious symbols. I cannot stand for that and that's why I am proud to stand with my colleagues on this issue, and urge the Supreme Court to reverse the Fourth Circuit's misguided decision. The brief supports the American Legion's efforts to protect a cross in a Maryland memorial which has honored the memory of 49 World War I soldiers for over 90 years. The case, brought by the American Humanist Association, could come before the Supreme Court for review after the Fourth Circuit of Appeals reversed the District Court's original ruling in favor of the American Legion.
