Funding will expand centers’ capacity to help care for an additional 5,000 patients WASHINGTON, D.C. – On National Rural Health Day, Senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller, along with Congressman Nick Rahall, today announced more than $1.5 million in federal funding for two community health centers in West Virginia. The facilities set to receive funding are Community Care of West Virginia in Rock Cave and Williamson Health and Wellness Center. The funding will help these community health centers strengthen and expand their health and wellness services, and begin to service more than 5,000 additional patients. “Especially in underserved and rural areas, improving access to quality health care is a major priority for the people of West Virginia,” said Manchin. “It’s so important that our families can get the preventive and primary care that will keep them healthy, and this funding will help these facilities provide the best possible preventive care, treatment and health services.” “When I first came to West Virginia, I was struck by the number of adults and children who’d never been to a dentist, or visited a doctor for a basic check-up. Since then, I’ve been committed to helping the uninsured and those living in underserved communities in our state access good medical care,” Rockefeller said. “This funding is so important because it will boost the health care services provided by two important community health centers – and in turn, that’s going to boost the foundation we have in West Virginia to support and maintain a healthier population.” “Community health centers, like in Williamson, are critical to expanding access to high-quality, primary and preventive care services in southern West Virginia. This funding will go a long way toward addressing the unmet health care needs of our region, while boosting local employment and economic growth,” said Rahall. The $1,516,667 in federal funding comes from the Affordable Care Act through the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HHS/HRSA) Health Access Point Grant Program. This initiative provides grant funding to community health centers to help increase their ability to provide comprehensive health care, including primary and preventive care, to underserved areas and areas with high numbers of uninsured. The individual award amounts are: • $812,500 – Williamson Health and Wellness Center – Williamson, W. Va. • $704,167 – Community Care of West Virginia – Rock Cave, W. Va.
