(Geologically, the mountains are simply the northernmost extension of the Chiricahuas, but, historically, they are a range unto themselves.) The trip takes you past an old Army fort, a rugged wilderness, a charming little museum dedicated to one of Arizona's native sons and a winery tasting room. Part of the route is unpaved, but the road is in generally good condition and, unless the weather's bad, you can make the trip in a sedan. Things to note along the way: Fort Bowie National Historic Site: History seems tangible at Fort Bowie, the Army's center of operations in southeastern Arizona from 1862 to 1894. The fairly easy, 11/2-mile walk to the old fort transports you back in time, giving you a real appreciation for how the soldiers who once lived here must have felt. Along the way you'll see an old Butterfield Stage Station, the Post Cemetery, the site of the Chiricahua Apache Indian Agency and Apache Spring, the life-giving source of water at the center of the area's many conflicts. Dos Cabezas Mountains: If you've ever driven past Willcox or Bowie, you've seen the "two heads" from which the mountains derive their name. The granite peaks, nearly identical in appearance from most angles, are about 8,350 feet high. The nearly 12,000-acre Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness has a few springs but no developed hiking trails. Keeling Schaefer Vineyards: This winery has created award-winning wines, including a Grenache and a Chardonnay that were rated 86 by Wine Spectator magazine. This producer offers tastings at its room in what used to be the Willcox Bank and Trust building. Details: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays. 154 N. Railroad Ave., Willcox. Tastings cost $7 and include a commemorative glass. 520-824-2500, keelingschaefervineyards.com. Don't miss: The Rex Allen Arizona Cowboy Museum honors one of the great singing cowboys. Allen, born on a ranch about 40 miles from Willcox, played guitar and sang at local events as a child before gaining fame on the WLS radio show "National Barn Dance." He starred in the TV series "Frontier Doctor" and narrated a number of Disney pictures and TV shows. Be sure to check out the park across the street from the museum. The statue of Allen there has a bronze, anatomically correct heart in it, a request Allen made as a symbol that his heart would always be in Willcox. There's also a monument to Allen's beloved horse, KoKo, who is buried in the park. Details: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. 150 N. From central Phoenix, take Interstate 10 east about 115 miles to Tucson, and then continue east about 105 miles. At Bowie (Exit 362), take Apache Pass Road south about 13 miles to Fort Bowie National Historic Site. After your visit, continue southwest on Apache Pass Road about 8 miles. At Arizona 186, turn northwest (right) and go about 22 miles to Willcox. Return to the Valley via I-10.
