This promising development is an important step in addressing Tunisia’s current political crisis and advances Tunisia’s democratic transition. I welcome the government and opposition’s commitment to consensus and the willingness of all parties to place national unity above partisan politics. “I encourage Mr. Jomaa to work quickly to choose effective and competent ministers that would finalize the constitution and create an electoral law that paves the way for free and fair elections. Democracy requires political consensus and accountability, and I encourage Tunisia’s leaders to continue to work together to develop a constitutional process and plan for elections that achieves both.
