Claire McCaskill paid a visit to Columbia Monday to tour the Patriot Place apartments, a campus providing housing for homeless veterans. The City of Columbia, in partnership with the Columbia Housing Authority, Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital and the not-for-profit organization Welcome Home, turned the old Deluxe Inn into a 25-unit apartment building. The project began in February 2014, and the first resident moved in May 2016. Three months later, all 25 fully-furnished units were occupied by a veteran. Columbia Housing Authority CEO Phil Steinhaus said the efforts are paying off. "We've housed 25 more, so I think it's making an impact," Steinhaus said. "We've been operating the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program since 2008. We see a lot of veterans once they move into stable housing, be able to move back up into self-reliance and independence." McCaskill, the daughter of a World War II veteran, has made combating veteran homelessness a priority of her work in the Senate. Before moving in, veteran Sonny Brown was homeless on the streets, dealing with a dangerous drinking problem. In just two short months at Patriot Place, a now-sober Brown has taken classes and is going back to school. "The apartment is so great," Brown said. "The people that work here, my neighbors, everyone's great." Print Email Tweet 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
