Claire McCaskill said Thursday she has donated $10,000 of her own money to establish a hotline for Missouri legislative interns who may have been harassed. McCaskill said she made the donation last week to the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Former House Speaker John Diehl, R-Town and Country, resigned in May when sexually charged text messages he exchanged with a 19-year-old intern from Missouri Southern State University became public. Sen. Paul LeVota, D-Independence, later resigned after a sexual harassment claim by a University of Central Missouri intern was partly substantiated in a university investigation. LeVota denied the allegations. In response, Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff, proposed an intern policy putting outside counsel in charge of investigating sexual harassment claims and require House members to participate in ethics and conduct training. McCaskill said the hotline "would allow any intern anywhere in the state to get good information about what options they have and what the laws are. "Really, it would be just an additional resource. I applaud the actions the general assembly is taking to address the problems they have there. But I do think (after) speaking to the young women that bravely came forward this past year, and drawing from my own experience when I was an intern many, many years ago, is that the biggest issue facing someone who is being harassed in a situation where someone has a lot more power than you have is, 'where can I go to find out what I should do?'
