Claire McCaskill is putting out a nationwide appeal to find World War II veterans who may have been exposed to mustard-gas experiments during World War II. It came in apre-Veterans Day opinion in USA Today.McCaskill, D-Mo., asked readers who think they were exposed or know someone who may be to respond to mccaskill.senate.gov/mustard-gas-tests. She estimates that about 60,000 service members were subject to these experiments, and that "several thousand" had full-body exposure. Records on the experiments were unsealed more than 20 years ago, but McCaskill and other critics have said the federal government has lagged in locating and compensating victims. McCaskill complained that Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs have been"largely unresponsive"to her inquiries. Defense Secretary Ash Carter promised more cooperation in a hearing last week, and VA Secretary Robert McDonald, in a speech at the National Press Club last Friday, also promised to do more.
