The U.S. Senate subpoenaed Backpage.com for documents about its screening of online ads for suspected trafficking. They were then turned over to McCaskill’s bi-partisan committee investigation. “We finally got 200,000 pages of documents, and they also filed a motion for an extension and asked that they have until November 18th to complete the production given the volume of material.” McCaskill tells MissouriNet. Since then, Backpage’s CEO has been charged with pimping. McCaskill added, “We all want to make sure that there’s another CEO that comes along and starts another company and does the same thing. And that’s why we’ve got to look at the laws and see what we can do to protect the first amendment, but also protect children.” MissouriNet says more than 70% of child sex trafficking reports are tied to Backpage ads.
