Roy Blunt of Missouri on Monday landed a spot on the secretive Senate committee that oversees the nation’s intelligence agencies. Blunt will give up his seat on the Senate’s Armed Services committee, but will remain on the committees on appropriations, commerce and rules. Blunt also serves on the defense appropriations subcommittee. “I’m pleased to rejoin the Senate Intelligence Committee at a time when the nation continues to face real threats from enemies who wish us harm,” said Blunt, who previously was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2011 and 2012. “I look forward to building on my experience working on these issues in the House and Senate,” he said. “I also plan to stay fully engaged in the discussion surrounding the relocation of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and working to ensure that facility stays in Missouri.” Blunt’s fellow senator from Missouri, Democrat Claire McCaskill, was named to the top Democratic position on the Senate’s Special Committee on Aging. Democrats’ loss of Senate control means that McCaskill will step down from the leadership of two subcommittees on consumer protection and financial oversight. But she indicated in a statement Monday that the new assignment as ranking Democrat on the Aging committee will enable her to continue to fight consumer scams, many of which target seniors. “I’m eager to continue our work to protect consumers and seniors, to make sure Congress is living up to the promises we’ve made to them, and to help ensure their government is working for them,” McCaskill said.
