In a press release from the senator Tuesday, it was announced that McCaskill asked the agency to implement strong upfront oversight safeguards against waste and abuse. The FCC is preparing to award $1.98 billion in rural broadband funding next year. McCaskill wrote in a letter to the leadership of the FCC that “…More than 112,000 locations in rural Missouri are preliminarily eligible for universal service funding through the auction. These unserved communities have been waiting years for broadband and the auction presents a unique opportunity to finally allow universal service funding to flow to these communities in Missouri.” McCaskill cited concerns that the commission would fail to ensure sufficient safeguards in the auction that would not only fail to connect rural Missouri with broadband, but also risk introducing waste and fraud into the program. She encouraged the commission to screen applicants in an effort to ensure that they were qualified and capable of serving households in the geographic areas in which they were bidding. In 2018, the FCC is expected to move forward with a first-of-its-kind reverse auction to award $1.98 million a year over the next 10 years in funding for broadband in rural and underserved areas.
