The funds were part of $4.85 million in grants for six Marine Highway projects along the waterways of 17 states and the District of Columbia announced last week by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. The goal of the Marine Highway Program is to expand use the nation’s navigable waterways to relieve landside congestion, reduce air emissions and increase the surface transportation system’s efficiency. The St. Louis Port Authority, along with partners Inland Rivers Ports & Terminals Inc. (IRPT), Mississippi Rivers Cities & Towns Initiative (MRCTI), and Upper Mississippi River Basin Association (UMRBA), was awarded $96,000 to develop containerized shipping along the Mississippi River, between New Orleans, Minneapolis and Chicago. “Missouri’s economy thrives when our producers are able to get their products to market around the country and the world, and we’ve got to give them the tools to get there,” U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-St. Louis, and a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, said in a statement Tuesday. “That’s why this grant is great news for our state — enabling us to unlock one of our most valuable highways of commerce, our rivers, and helping create jobs and boosting our economy by transporting goods more efficiently.” The Illinois Container on Barge Shuttle program, was awarded $713,000. The program, sponsored by America’s Central Port in Metro East, is an 18-month demonstration project to provide shuttle service for agricultural customers moving containerized exports between southern and northern Illinois to access the Union Pacific and BNSF rail ramps. The service will operate on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers between Channahon and Granite City. There will be an option to extend container-on-barge service to the Gulf of Mexico ports.
