This is an important step to bring greater accountability and oversight to the air ambulance industry, whose practices have often left patients with tens of thousands of dollars of debt, McCaskill said. While this might not solve every problem within the air ambulance industry, it's a bipartisan measure that will provide us with critical information and better empower consumers, bringing us closer to a solutionI'm not afraid to compromise to make real progress. Key provisions of McCaskill'sAir Ambulance Consumer Protection Actwere included in theFederal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act,which passed Congress with wide bipartisan support. The provisions would require air ambulance operators to include the complaint hotline and website for the U.S. Department of Transportation on all bills sent to consumers; establish an Advisory Committee on Air Ambulance and Patient Billing to make recommendations related to air ambulance practices, including how to protect consumers from balance billing; and require the Secretary of Transportation to create a plan for conducting oversight of the air ambulance industry and provide guidance to states on how to refer air ambulance complaints to the U.S. Department of Transportation. McCaskill had previouslycalled for answersfrom health insurers and air ambulance providers andintroduced legislationthat would bring more accountability to the industry. Continuing her work to strengthen oversight of air ambulance service and address the trend of consumers being saddled with a growing share of costs, McCaskill and Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippicalled on the U.S. Department of Transportationto explain how it oversees air ambulance service.
