Helping Missouri firefighters is something we can and should come together on and exactly the type of issue where people just want us to work together, McCaskill said. These resources represent more firefighters and better equipment for departments across the state, and I plan to keep working in a bipartisan way to ensure our first-responders have what they need to save lives. The Fire Grants Reauthorization Act reauthorized the highly successful Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs through Fiscal Year 2024. AFG protects communities and firefighters from fire-related hazards by providing eligible fire departments the financial support to train, equip and properly resource Americas emergency personnel. The SAFER program provides funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter organizations to help increase and maintain the number of trained firefighters in local communities. Over the last two years, the Missouri Division of Fire Safetywhich is based in Jefferson Cityreceived nearly $500,000 in grants from these programs for equipment. Dozens of fire organizations across the state have received grant funding through these programs. McCaskillwho as a young Jackson County prosecutor was tasked with prosecuting arson cases in the cityis a longtime supporter of grant funding for state and local first responders and law enforcement, including through the Justice Departments Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which allows state and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime. Earlier this year, McCaskill met withMissouris State Council of Firefighters last monthto discuss her commitment to public safety and the funding challenges they face. Continuing her longstanding support for Missouri firefighters and first responders and recognizing the need to support firefighters in rural communities, McCaskill is backing legislation to strengthen education benefits for volunteer firefighters and first responders at up to 100 or more fire departments in Missouri. McCaskills plan would expand eligibility to volunteer firefighters and first responders for the Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Any volunteer firefighter or first responder with student loans would be eligible for this program, which could pay off the entirety of their student loan debt.
