Both pieces of legislation are now with the House of Representatives for consideration. The Senate passed McCaskill'sPatient Right to Know Drug Prices Actwhich prohibits gag clauses in individual market and group-based insurance plans by a 98-2 vote Monday evening. Coupled with the Senate'spassage of a McCaskill billearlier this month to prohibit gag clauses in Medicare Part D, these actions would give Missourians wide-ranging protections from this practice. The data shows that in 2013 alone, there was $135 million paid by Americans more than they should've, said McCaskill in a speech on the Senate floor Monday evening. Sometimes commonsense needs to scoot all the ideology out of this place, and we need to just look at the bare bones issue of how to save people money on prescription drugsand that's what this bill will accomplish. So I am thrilled that we're going to have a chance to get this done. One 2018reportfound that customers overpaid for prescription drugs at the pharmacy counter 23% of the time. McCaskill, along with Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan,led the pushto prohibit this practice. McCaskill has made tackling rising healthcare and prescription drug costs a top priority in the Senate.Last month, shereleased an investigative reportthat showed that drug prices directly negotiated by the government could save the Medicare Part D program $2.8 billion in a single year on the 20 most commonly prescribed brand-name drugs alone.During her time as the top Democrat on the Senate Special Committee on Aging, McCaskill joined Republican Chairman Susan Collins to launch anin-depth investigation into prescription drug price increases, and last year, President Trump signed into law the Senators'bipartisan legislationto increase competition for generic drugs and help lower prescription costs.
