Currently, women are 80 percent more likely than men to face poverty in retirement. I've witnessed firsthand the challenges women face in the workforceand it comes as no surprise that they continue into retirement, McCaskill said. This proposal ensures they'll have access to the fair, stable retirement they deserve. The McCaskill-backed legislation would address some of the challenges that disproportionately affect women by: strengthening consumer protections to safeguard retirement savings; improving access to retirement savings plans for long-term andpart-time workers; helping increase women's financial literacy; and giving support to low-income women and survivors of domestic abuse seeking the retirement benefits they are entitled to following a divorce. McCaskill has been a longtime advocate for women's economic advancement, consistently supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act, which helps close the pay gap by empowering women to negotiate for equal pay, closing loopholes courts have created in the law, creating strong incentives for employers to obey the laws, and strengthening federal outreach and enforcement efforts. Protecting Social Security benefits and advocating for the program's recipients have also been priorities for McCaskill in the Senate. McCaskill backed the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act that would repeal provisions in law that reduce Social Security payouts for individuals who paid into Social Security, yet are also eligible for pension benefits from public sector jobs outside the Social Security system.
