| https://www.mccaskill.senate.gov/media-center/news-releases/voicing-support-for-29-million-for-north-st-louis-city-revitalization-efforts-mccaskill-appeals-directly-to-housing-and-urban-development-secretary- | Voicing Support for $29 Million for North St. Louis City Revitalization Efforts, McCaskill Appeals Directly to Housing & Urban Development Secretary | 2016-12-06 | 2016 | 2016-12 | Democrat | House | MO | Claire McCaskill | M001170 | www.mccaskill.senate.gov | legacy | Voicing Support for $29 Million for North St. Louis City Revitalization Efforts, McCaskill Appeals Directly to Housing & Urban Development Secretary City is finalist for up to $29.5 million in grant funding through Choice Neighborhoods program Tuesday, December 6, 2016 WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today voiced her strong support for the City of St. Louis in its application for up to $29.5 million in grant funding through the Choice Neighborhoods program, speaking with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro to urge consideration of the city’s application for revitalization efforts in North St. Louis. “As our vibrant city continues to expand, these critical resources would go a long way to help revitalize the enormous potential in some of our struggling neighborhoods,” McCaskill said. “I’m confident that the strong partnerships on the ground in St. Louis would ensure these funds have a transformative impact on the Near North Side community, and I hope the Administration will support what we in St. Louis already know—that this program would be an enormous economic boon to the neighborhood and the surrounding community.” In a letter McCaskill sent last month to Secretary Castro in support of St. Louis’ application she stated, “The Choice Neighborhood grant would direct resources to poverty stricken residential areas [near the new National Geospatial Intelligence Agency site] and ensure that the redevelopment and economic growth can extend to and benefit these longtime St. Louis residents.” In September, with strong support from McCaskill, St. Louis was named a finalist for the prestigious Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The application put forth by the City was selected as one of the top five out of 34 cities for its development of a viable, feasible plan for the transformation of the Near North Side and focused on health, education, public safety, social services, job training, entrepreneurship, housing, and neighborhood enhancements. McCaskill has been a strong advocate for continued revitalization efforts for the City of St. Louis and surrounding regions. Working closely with the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County, McCaskill supported the designation of St. Louis as a Promise Zone —a partnership between the federal government and the community to boost economic development, reduce crime, leverage private investment, and improve educational opportunities. Additionally, she helped secure a $5 million grant to create approximately 3,000 jobs for St. Louis youth.
