And I remember the faraway battlefields that claimed thousands more in the years that followed. “My deepest sympathies today are with those Americans for whom the grief of September 11th is not abstract but personal and unrelenting. Time will continue to ease our nation’s shared pain, but it will never fill empty seats at family tables. And so those who continue to carry the heaviest burdens of that day and its aftermath must remain in our prayers. “But on top of remembrance and sympathy rests another national responsibility every bit as important: to give weight to the words Never Again. From the smoke and rubble of 9/11 came lessons about the fragility of our nation’s security and what it takes to preserve it. We paid for these lessons with thousands of precious American lives.
